In 1969, the year of Gandhi’s birth centenary, the National Service Scheme (NSS), an initiative of the Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports of the Government of India, was introduced in 37 universities and involved 40,000 students. Its main goal was to help students develop their personalities through community service.

More than 3.2 million student volunteers are currently registered with NSS, which is dispersed over 298 universities, 42 (+2) senior secondary councils, and the Directorate of Vocational Education.
More than 3.75 cores of students from universities, colleges, and other higher education institutions like AKITS college in Kothagudem have benefited from NSS activities since they began as student volunteers.
